Money Saving Hacks for New Moms

Money-Saving Hacks For New Moms

I’ve used all of these ways to shop, and they have been lifesavers for me as a mom in the baby, toddler, and preschool stages.

How To Save Money While Shopping

I shopped at Target for many years before I finally got a Target REDcard.  Looking back, I can only imagine how much money I would have saved had I signed up for one sooner. The Target REDcard is totally worth getting. When you shop using your REDcard, not only do you get five percent off at checkout (every time you shop), but you also get free shipping on most orders at and an extra 30 days for returns. As a new mom, I take advantage of these benefits often.

How To Save Money on Baby Products

In addition to saving five percent every time I shop, I also take advantage of the many gift card promotions Target offers.  For example, they recently offered a free $15 gift card for spending $75 on diapers or wipes, so it was a great time to stock up on both.

Shopping at SuperTarget with kids is great because I can get stuff for the house, clothes, accessories, gifts, and groceries all in one place. And, they will give your child (12 and under) a free cookie or piece of fresh fruit at the bakery. My daughters love this perk!

Recently, I started using Target Drive Up, and it’s amazing.  It’s a free service where they deliver your order to your vehicle in the parking lot and load it for you.  My recent order consisted of multiple boxes of diapers, wipes, and a big, heavy bag of dog food, and they brought it all out and loaded it into my car within minutes of my arrival.  I didn’t even have to get out of the car!  It’s so convenient for moms.  To sign up for a Target REDcard and start saving five percent every time you shop, click here and choose either the debit card or credit card option.

What Are Some Other Easy Ways To Save Money?

Ebates is an easy and free way to earn cash back just for shopping online. Not only can you earn cash back by going through their website first, they will also tell you about promotions and deals with each company right there on their website. For example, as I am writing this, it shows that you can earn 12 percent cash back by shopping online at Carter’s through Ebates and get an extra 20 percent off of a $40 purchase. A promo code is provided.

How does it work?  To start earning cash back at thousands of retailers, simply go to Ebates’ website first, and click on the retailer.  Let Ebates take you to the store’s website and begin shopping.  That’s it! What’s the catch?  There isn’t one.  Ebates simply earns a commission on referrals, and they share that commission with you.  Some of my favorite places to shop through Ebates are Target, Amazon, Old Navy, Etsy, and Carter’s.  You can get a $10 cash bonus in your Ebates account after your first $25 purchase by signing up for free through my link here.

Ibotta is another free way to earn cash back. I am so bad about clipping coupons, remembering to take them to the store, and then figuring out which ones to use at checkout. With Ibotta, you don’t have to worry about any of that. It’s like using coupons without the hassle of clipping coupons. You simply sign up for a free account and then after you shop, select your products that have coupons in the app (You may be asked to scan your products as well.), scan your receipt, and watch the cash fall into your Ibotta account.

I use the app when I shop at Target and Kroger, but there are a lot of places you can use the service. You can also earn cash back when shopping online by starting in your Ibotta app first. For example, I can search Buy Buy Baby in my Ibotta app, press “Shop” and then earn cash back when shopping at You can find more creative ways to save money while shopping in your Ibotta app. You can receive a $10 welcome bonus by signing up for free here.

How To Save Money on Food

Rather than dining out, consider cooking at home more often.  If you’re like me, however, coming up with new meal ideas can be difficult.  That’s why I use this weekly meal plan to help me do just that.  This meal plan has been a game changer for our family.  Before, I would spend so much time looking for just the right recipes, and sometimes they turned out okay, and other times not so much.  There wasn’t much rhyme or reason to what we would have; it was just whatever I could come up with at the time.  I would spend a lot of money on the groceries for the meals, and the leftovers would often go to waste.  As a mom, I found myself more and more settling for takeout just to keep mealtime simpler, and that got expensive fast!

How To Cook At Home More

The great thing about this inexpensive service is you receive delicious recipes every week, along with a shopping list.  The company was started by a busy mom of four and uses simple ingredients to create recipes the whole family will love. And I can say after cooking many of the meals, it’s saved me a lot of time and our family a lot of money.  Plus, we really love the meals!  I’ve not only had access to recipes perfect for busy families and cooked at home more often as a result, but by following the recipes in the meal plan, I’ve become a better cook along the way. You can get access to a free trial of the meal plan here.

How To Save Money When Pregnant

An easy way to save money while pregnant is to register at multiple places.  Stores often provide a bag of freebies and/or coupons when you register at their store.  Pick at least two places at which to register.  This gives your family and friends options and also gives you two bags of goodies and coupons.

Other ways to save money while pregnant include: checking out parenting and pregnancy books from the library rather than purchasing; borrowing or buying used baby gear, clothing, and nursery furniture from family and friends; shopping yard sales for pregnancy and baby items; and asking family, friends, and co-workers for coupons that they would otherwise throw away.

Where To Find Cute Maternity Clothes

Do you ever just wish you could have your own personal stylist do your clothes shopping for you? During my last pregnancy, I requested a “Fix” from Stitch Fix and received the most perfect pair of maternity denim capris that I wore almost every day during my pregnancy! Then, right after my pregnancy, I ordered a Fix and received the most comfortable (and stylish) pair of jeans.  I couldn’t believe they fit so well after having a baby, but the stylist knew exactly the style to send for a recently pregnant mom.

Stitch Fix is a super fun way to shop for clothing.  How does it work?  Stylists will put together a selection of five items according to your style and budget as noted in your style profile.  Then, the items are shipped directly to you.  Anything you choose not to keep can be easily returned.  It’s simple!  No endless scrolling through online clothing retailers, picking out things that may or may not work, printing return labels, and finding the time to make a trip to the post office for returns.  You get a personalized shopping experience in a super convenient way.  That’s why I love Stitch Fix because it makes shopping for clothes so much easier.

Having a personalized selection of clothes arrive on my doorstep is so helpful and is such a timesaver. I love being able to try them on in my own home over the course of a few days without the hassle of going to the store. It also saves me money because I don’t have to drive to the mall, buy a bunch of options, take them home, try them on, and then go back to make returns.  I’m also not at the mall spending money on other things.  I’m able to get just the outfit I need and that’s all.    I love it so much that I love giving the gift of Stitch Fix, too. Check out the gift card options here.  Stitch Fix has options for women, men, and kids.

How To Save Money on Travel

We love traveling. Whether it’s a last-minute, spontaneous weekend trip or a thoughtfully planned out week-long vacation, sometimes it’s just nice to get away on a family vacation.

One of my favorite things about traveling is how much money can be saved. Traveling doesn’t have to be expensive.  For example, we rarely spend money on hotels (I can’t remember the last time we paid for a hotel room!). If we need to rent a car, it’s at a deep discount. And most of the time when we spend money, we earn cash back and points.

How To Stay in Hotels For Free

Earn points toward free hotel stays. Save money on travel just by charging your purchases on a credit card that gives you points toward free hotel stays. With the Hilton Honors American Express, for example, you can earn bonus points for purchases at restaurants, supermarkets, gas stations, and many other places, and there’s no annual fee! We use our card all the time, pay off the balance in full every month, and have enjoyed numerous free hotel stays at a variety of hotels in the Hilton brand including Hilton, Hilton Garden Inn, and Homewood Suites.  For example, we just returned from a trip to Magnolia Market and stayed completely FREE at the Hilton Waco located in Downtown Waco just minutes from the Silos.

By being a Hilton Honors member, you also receive some nice perks when staying at one of their hotels. Apply for a Hilton Honors American Express through my referral link and earn 65,000 Hilton Honors bonus points after spending $1,000 in purchases on the Card within the first 3 months of Card membership.

Use Ebates for everything!  Ebates is the simplest way to earn cash back online. It’s three easy steps. 1. Join for free at the Ebates website. 2. Search for any company to see if they are offering cash back, i.e.,, Travelocity, Priceline, Hertz, etc. 3. Click the “Shop Now” button. You will be taken to their website, and you can book travel as usual. The difference is that after the transaction, you will receive cash back in your Ebates account that will be paid to you on a quarterly basis. I use Ebates all the time and love getting a check in the mail each quarter for simply starting at their website when I make purchases online. Sign up for Ebates through this referral link and receive $10 after making your first purchases totaling $25 or more in the first 90 days.

Check Airbnb for unique accommodation options.  Would you like to stay in an awesome house or apartment instead of a hotel? We stayed in an adorable tiny house that I found on Airbnb on a recent family vacation and had a blast!  Are you traveling in a group? It may be cheaper to book through Airbnb. When I traveled to Washington, D.C., with my husband and brothers, we booked an apartment through Airbnb and split the cost. It ended up being much cheaper than booking multiple hotel rooms. Plus, we got to stay in a fun neighborhood area and live like locals while we were there.

People will rent out everything from guest houses, cute bungalows, and Airstreams, to entire homes on land and acreage. It’s really fun to search through the options, and be sure to read through the reviews. Sign up for Airbnb through this referral link and receive $40 off your first trip of $75 or more.

Simple Savings Account for Baby

At some point during your pregnancy or the first year, I recommend meeting with a financial advisor who can answer questions related to specific savings plans for your child.

However, if you’re looking for a simple way to start saving money for your child’s future in an account that earns interest, I’ve provided information on the account that we have set up for our kids.

We had a Capital One 360 savings account before I got pregnant the first time, and then we opened a second account for our kids. I have been happy with our Capital One 360 accounts because there are no fees, no minimum balance requirements, and best of all, they earn interest! You can open an account here.
